Afiq Abu Hassan | Structural Engineer
Can you give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at Longitude?
I joined Longitude this year and have been diving into training on new software like FEMAP and GHS, working with calculation spreadsheets, and supporting projects wherever I can. I genuinely enjoy learning new things – there’s something really satisfying about that moment when everything clicks and starts to make sense. I have a background in naval architecture and prior experience in structural engineering and technical drawings, which has enabled me to pick things up quickly and step in to help the team wherever needed. It’s been a great start, and I’m excited to keep growing and contributing to the work we do here at Longitude.
What inspired you to join your profession?
My journey into structural engineering began with an innocent childhood dream of sailing the seas as a pirate. While the swashbuckling ambitions faded, my fascination with ships and the ocean remained strong. Over time, that curiosity evolved into a passion for ship design and marine structures. During a six-month student internship with Longitude, I had the opportunity to turn that passion into practical experience. The exposure to real-world engineering challenges and collaborative problem-solving confirmed my desire to pursue a career in the field. After completing my studies, I took a role in a shipyard to gain some practical knowledge on shipbuilding and returned to Longitude with a clear goal: to contribute to delivering innovative, high-quality engineering solutions.
Can you share with us something exciting that you are currently working on?
Right now, I’m still doing some training, refining my skills and learning about Longitude’s processes, methodologies and workflow but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to apply this knowledge and some of my previous experience to Longitude’s future projects and contribute to the team and Longitude’s growth.
Looking ahead, what do you think is key to driving sustainability in your industry?
I believe the future of the marine industry depends on our ability to balance sustainability with safety. As engineers, we play a crucial role in shaping how vessels are designed and operated – not just to reduce environmental impact, but also to ensure they meet the highest safety standards. Sustainability starts with innovation: using smarter materials, improving energy efficiency, and leveraging digital tools like simulation software to optimise performance. But it’s just as important to make sure these solutions don’t compromise safety. Whether it’s structural integrity, stability, or operational procedures, safety has to be embedded into every decision we make.
Besides work, what do you enjoy most about working within ABL Group?
One of the things I enjoy most about working here is the social events hosted by both ABL Group and Longitude. From team bonding activities like escape rooms to relaxed sessions with light games and snacks, these gatherings offer a great way to unwind and connect with colleagues. I especially appreciate the chance to meet and build relationships with the wider ABL team in the Singapore office – it’s a fun and meaningful part of the work culture that makes coming to work even more enjoyable.
